Obesity, nutrition and metabolic syndrome
Obesity prevalence in Europe continuously increases, but still it is more common in some countries than others what raises the question of cultural and behavioural impacts on its development. Definition of metabolic syndrome in the scientific literature has still not reached the consensus but all the definitions undoubtly associate its risk to the increasing prevalence of obesity. Considering the fact that obesity is one of the basic characteristics of the metabolic syndrome, primary principles of its medical treatment are focused exactly on the obesity treatment and prevention. Based on the dominant metabolic syndrome characteristic dietary approaches vary, but the common element is the reduction in body weight which should be achieved through balanced nutrition with low caloric intake and increased physical activity. Scientific evidences imply positive effect of diet rich in fruit, vegetables and whole grains. One of the most popular and most effective approaches is Mediterranean diet.
