Influence of the season and breed on the early pregnancy loss in dairy cattle
It has been suggested that ambient temperature can significantly influence pregnancy loss rate in cattle. The objectives of the study were to establish relationships between breed and ambient temperature on early pregnancy loss rate for dairy cattle in Croatia. Animals were housed on five dairy farms with similar management systems. A total of 600 cows (300 Simmental and 300 Holstein-Friesian) were artificially inseminated. The outcome measure was pregnancy loss rate between days 32 and 86 following the last artificial insemination. The overall pregnancy loss rate was for 2.36 times higher for Holstein- Friesian if compared to Simmental cows (P<0.05). The early pregnancy losses were the most frequent during the hot summer months (III Quartile) of the year (P<0.05) with more than the half of the pregnancy losses recorded. It can be suggested that breed and ambient temperature significantly influences early pregnancy loss rate for dairy cows.
