Metal ions on historical textile
In the restoration of textiles, textile articles are attempted to restore to their original form by removing various damages and cleaning the miscellaneous applications that exist on those articles. Textiles are often thoroughly decorated with a variety of beads, lace, buttons or coins, hence they can contain metal fibers threads for decoration purposes. Such metal threads can be often found on uniforms, traditional costumes, antique shields coated in fabrics, church attires, decorative fabrics, etc. As each metal has its own physical and chemical properties and they are individually cleaned with certain reagents, it is necessary to perform a detailed analysis before the restoration. This paper describes the use of inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy (ICP -OES) in the analysis of metal fibers. The impact of synthetic sweat solution to the corrosion of metal fibers found on historic textiles was also examined and the preliminary results, with an emphasis on the traditional costume, have been shown. Before the analysis it is necessary to properly prepare the sample and then the determination of metals in synthetic sweat solution can be made. This method was carried out simultaneous determination of copper, silver, nickel and iron ions that are often found in historic textiles.
