MONITORING OF MAJOR ACIDIC SPECIES IN PM10 PARTICLE FRACTION IN ZAGREB AIR, CROATIA
This paper presents the results of 13 years (1999 – 2011) continuous measurement of major acidic anions chlorides, nitrates, and sulphates in PM10 particle fraction in Zagreb air in relation to their mass concentrations, mass ratio of pollutants and prediction of relative importance of pollutant sources. Twenty-four-hour samples of PM10 particle fraction were collected in the northern residential part of Zagreb, at the distance of approximately 20 metres from the road with moderate to high traffic density. Mass concentrations of PM10 particle fraction were determined by gravimetry. Acidic anions chloride, nitrate and sulphate were analysed using ion chromatography. Results show that the annual average mass concentrations of measured pollutants varied from 29.8 µg m-3 to 40.0 µg m-3 for PM10, from 0.15 µg m-3 to 1.00 µg m-3 for chlorides, from 2.34 µg m-3 to 9.28 µg m-3 for nitrates, and from 3.64 µg m-3 to 11.28 µg m-3 for sulphates, respectively. The most abundant contributing species to the PM10 particle fraction were sulphates followed by nitrates, and then by chlorides.
