Daily intake of some essential minerals and heavy metals by school children through milk consumption
Minerals occur in all foodstuffs thus a milk and dairy products. The mineral content in milk is influenced by many factors ranging from environmental conditions during pasture-fed, feeding, breeding, stage of lactation and climate to post-milking handling, transportation and processing. In this work milk samples are purchased from market four times in year and analyzed. Concentrations of 11 minerals were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The daily intakes of these minerals by school children selected in age-sex groups through milk consumption also been estimated. The aim of the study was to assess whether the intakes comply with recommended dietary allowances (RDA)for essential and permissible levels for toxic elements. The calculated average daily intakes of essential minerals were not close to the recommended intakes for determined age-sex children groups. Calculated daily intakes of toxic heavy metals through milk consumption were well below the permissible levels.
