The desalination module in the EnergyPLAN advanced energy system analyses tool: a case study for Jordan

The integration of water and energy systems is an important concept for the development of arid countries, especially the ones affected by water scarcity. If not enough water is present naturally, desalination must be implemented in order to mitigate the effects of water shortage. The implementation of desalination will, in most cases, increase the electricity demand of a country but the possibility for flexible operation and clever design of the desalination system can increase the potential for the penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar which can in turn power the desalination units. The goal of this paper is to showcase the newly implemented desalination module in the EnergyPLAN advanced energy system analyses tool and present it on a cases study for the country of Jordan. Two scenarios have been created for the years 2009, 2020 and 2050. The two scenarios are the business as usual and a 100% renewable scenario. The results of this paper show that the integration of water and energy systems can have a positive effect on the potential for the penetration of renewables and in turn on the reduction of fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and the increase of energy independence.
