Diagnosis of acute canine pancreatitis and comparison of clinical, laboratory and ultrasound findings
The medical archive of the Clinic for internal diseases during the period from 1st June 2012 to 1st June 2013 was searched for the following inclusion criteria: complete signalment, history and clinical examination, extensive laboratory workup, performed diagnostic imaging and positive IDEXX SNAP® cPL test. In this study 20 dogs were identified. Pancreatitis varied from mild to very severe casees. Only one patient (5%) was presented without signs of gastrointestinal tract involvement, and five patients (25%) were presented without signs of systemic inflammatory response syndrome. 60% of the patients were brought in the state of shock. Overall mortality was 10%, and two dogs had chronic consequences: chronic pancreatitis and diabetes mellitus. Abdominal ultrasound was in accordance with SNAP® cPL test in 11 patients (55%) and lipase in 15 patients (75%). The amylase was positive only in 5 patients (25%) which also had positive lipase. All tests were of better diagnostic aid in cases of severe pancreatitis.
