Trace elements in periosteal callus and cortical bone after plating for fracture
The amounts of certain trace elements (Fe, Ni, Cr, Cu, Mn, Zn, Pb, Br) were measured by spectroscopy of characteristic X-rays in specimens of cortical bone after removing an osteosynthetic metal plate applied for fracture treatment (n = 6) and in fragments of periosteal callus (n = 4) in secondary fracture healing. In bone specimens which were in close contact with the metal plate, higher concentrations of iron, manganese, nickel and chromium were found in comparison to periosteal callus. Due to the small number of specimens statistical analysis of the obtained results was not performed. However, the higher concentrations of metals detected in bone with allenthesis indicate the necessity for further research to determine the importance of such influences on the bone tissues' microenvironment.
