Controversies of being social entrepreneur: Coping with different roles and identities

The paper intends to question one of the main controversies of social entrepreneurship – duality of acting for deep social change and promoting entrepreneurial and market-based approach at the same time. The research continues on the previous author's PhD research on social, political, economic and cultural context of social entrepreneurship development in Croatia. As civil sector, mainly well established civil society organizations, is one of the basic sector in which social entrepreneurship emerges, the focus is placed on the entities and actors who experience transformations towards more market-based way of acting. The results of the multiple case studies, conducted as a part of the PhD thesis research, showed that actors-social entrepreneurs very often remain uncertain about their role and identity. They feel anxious about being entrepreneurs and experience difficulties adopting to the new identity, which is perceived as less worthy. The survey aims to provide insights in the main mechanisms that produce this dichotomy and to identify how it reflects both on their own and their users' perception of the role of social entrepreneurship in social change.
