Can Soldiers on 3rd-Century Stelae in Pannonia be Recognized Only by the Sagum?
The aim of the paper is to establish the picture of the Pannonian soldier, compare it to its Norican counterpart and try to explain the main difference, that is, the lack of the military belt in the artistic representations of Norican soldiers. One of the conclusions concerning Pannonia is that a man wearing the military belt should be a soldier, while one without it can be either a soldier or a civilian. Furthermore, it seems that soldier funerary iconographies in Pannonia had less to do with military rules and more with artistic conventions of various Norico-Pannonian workshops and the importation of stones.
