Potential use of foetometry and determination of fetal gender in cows
A variety of different methods have been, and still are used to detect the presence or absence of pregnancy in the cow. Realtime B-mode grey-scale ultrasound scanning is the method of choice for the early diagnosis of pregnancy in the cow. After confirmation of pregnancy, it is possible to monitor pregnancy and fetal development by ultrasound measurments of body parts of the fetus called fetometry. Fetometry is usually performed between 45 till 60 days combined with sex determination of fetus but could be performed during complete pregnancy and is potentially used to predict growth rate and potential risk of dystocia in cows. Fetal gender is successfully determined in cows pregnant between 55-110 days while measurements of foetal eye and placentome diameter could be successfully used as prediction of birth weight and potential dystocia, after 150 days of pregnancy till term.
