COMMON COMPILICATIONS AFTER COLIC SURGERY IN HORSES
The prognosis for survival in horses undergoing colic surgery has significantly improved in the last decade due mainly to early referal and surgical intervention, but also due to improvments in general anesthesia and postoperative medical management. Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract can result in significant systemic compromisies caused by intestinal distension proximal to the lesion, third-space pooling of fluid in the intestinal tract and intestinal mucosal damage with subsequent endotoxin absorption. Based on currnet literature postoperative ileus and endotoxic shock are described as causes of most postoperative deaths. These are followed by salmonellosis/colitis, long bone fracture, adhesions, hemorrhage, laminitis and wound infection. Colic surgeries are routinly performed in our clinic since last few years. In this period we performed colic surgeries in nine horses and encounterd different postoperative compications such as posthanesthetic myopathy (11%), postoperative ileus (22%) and incisional compications (11%). Two horses that sufferd from postoperative ileus were euthanatized and the horse with incisional infection was discharged but just after a prolong peroid of hospitalisation and nursing care. The horse that sufferd from posthanesthetic myopathy was succsesfully treated mainly with high-volume fluid therapy. Due to increasing number of sport and pleasure horses in Croatia, and therfore increasing number of operated horses in our facility, several other common postoperative complication are expectied such as adhesion formations, anastomotic obstruction, endotoxemia and septic peritonitis.
