Influence of body condition on ultrasonographic evaluation of selected stifle structures in the horse

The aim of this study was to investigate whether body condition of horses affects the ability to visualize the selected stifle structures. The study was conducted on 30 horses of different breeds that didn't show clinical signs of pathological changes in the stifles. Body condition was assessed by Henneke system with a scale of one to nine. Ultrasound examination of both stifle joints comprised review of patellar and collateral ligaments and meniscus. As a positive result was considered the visualization of certain structures within 10 minutes per structure. The obtained data was statistically analyzed to determine the interconnection parameters of body condition and visualization of selected anatomical structures of the stifle joint. Middle and medial patellar ligaments were visible in all examined horses. In 46.67% of horses were not visible lateral collateral ligaments, at 36.67% was not visible right lateral meniscus and in 33.33% the left lateral meniscus, and none of these horses had body condition graded less than five. Really statistically significant negative correlation (p <0.05) was between body condition and visualization of the lateral and medial collateral ligament and meniscus of both legs. The results suggest that body condition affects the ultrasound visibility of the selected stifle structures.
