Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria causing urinary tract infections in dogs and cats in Croatia
The aim of this study was to identify and determine the prevalence of bacteria causing urinary tract infections (UTI) in dogs and cats in Croatia, and to examine their susceptibility to antimicrobials. Urine samples were examined by quantitative bacteriological analysis and number of bacteria expressed as colony forming units per milliliter of urine. Identification was based on colony type and morphology, Gram staining characteristics, and standard biochemical tests. PCR was used for identification of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and detection of mecA gene. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Bacterial examination of 95 urine samples yielded 50 bacterial isolates, while the most frequent were Escherichia coli, S. pseudintermedius, Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Susceptibility to 13 to 17 antimicrobials was determined by disk-diffusion procedure, and the most active agents in vitro were amikacin, nitrofurantoin and ceftazidime. Hemolytic strains of E. coli were more frequently isolated in acute non-complicated cystitis, while non-hemolytic strains were associated with complicated UTI. These differences were statistically significant. Non-hemolytic E. coli strains were generally more resistant to antimicrobials compared to hemolytic strains. Unexpectedly high rates of antimicrobial resistance were detected for several antimicrobials which are commonly used for empirical treatment of UTI.
