Environmental protection in the Curricula of Faculties and Colledges in Technical Science in Republic of Croatia

The application of technology can be harmful for the environment - either by overloading or by pollution. When developing certain technologies the responsible persons must be acquainted with the principles and goals of environmental protection, in order to make appropriate decisions concerning the sustainable development. They must know the influence of a technology as well as the consequences of its application for the environment, and also the scientific achievements connected with alternative technologies. This refers especially to the production of energy and its renewable sources. This means that it is very important to educate experts to be competent to cope with the environmental protection. It is equally important to sensitize the students - together with their professional knowledge, skills and attitudes - to pay maximum attention to the newest achievements in environmental protection. In this paper the shares of environmental protection syllabi are presented - compared with the overall curriculum at universities and colleges of technical orientation. This refers first to engineering faculties, the compulsory or optional nature of the Subject and the number of ECTS it brings. Syllabi of similar orientation studies have been compared in order to find their possible connections (contents and methods). After that the goals, objectives and outcomes of environmental protection subjects have been compared in order to explore their possible similarity in requirements and burdening of students within the same study lines. Students' competencies necessary for solving problems in the environment have also been analyzed - especially those that were caused by application of technologies and techniques, as well as the responsibility of the mentioned faculties for emphasizing the importance of resources in the process of technological growth - according to the requirements of sustainable growth
