"Omics" technologies in veterinary medicine

In recent decades, the development of new technical and technological achievements in the field of biomedical sciences as well as the discovery of the human genome / proteome enabled deeper insight into the various areas of biomedicine. Particular application demonstrated in human oncology and pathology of the disease in terms of markers detections (genes, proteins), enabled better diagnostics and monitoring of the therapeutic response in patients. Animal genomics / proteomics in this respect was neglected, and it is only a few years ago began intensively studied and developed. All with the aim of identifying key factors (markers) in the occurrence of animal diseases and their comparability and compatibility with human diseases. Furthermore, this approach would enable more appropriate and specific veterinary and sanitary control over the spread of the disease in animals and introduction of specific markers for de novo classification of overall animals, microorganisms and food and animal products intended for human nutrition. New technical and technological approaches, such as proteomics and genomics would allow the identification of protein / gene markers for various pathophysiological conditions in commercially exploited animals all with the aim of achieving better productive performance, reduce production costs and in this matter, minimazing the occurrence and spread of the disease both within species as thus possible transmission of disease to humans (zoonoses). This lecture will briefly present possibilities of "omics" technologies in veterinary medicine, which could facilitate better scientific and economic support to the wider community, making it more competitive on a global scale.
