Surface free energy of multilayered weft-knitted fabrics and related composite plates
Textile reinforced composites started to be used in transport industry mostly to replace metal parts in vehicles due to low mass and high mechanical properties. The composite plates, made using a thermo-press from multilayered glass/polypropylene (MLG) reinforced weft-knitted fabrics and polypropylene matrix, were researched. The difference between MLG fabrics and related composite plates is in number of reinforced layers, thickness, mass per unit area, density and stitching yarn material. Since surface free energy (SFE) of textiles depends on the fabric density, its structure (e.g. knitted or woven), inter- and intra-yarn pores etc. it was interesting to investigate the SFE of continuous fiber-reinforced composite plates. In this paper, the surface free energies (SFE) of glass/polypropylene multilayered fabric reinforcement and polypropylene matrix in specified composite plates have been researched through contact angle and thin layer wicking methods.
