Serological surveillance for some viral agents in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) in Croatia

During the hunting season of 2009, blood samples from 32 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and 55 red deer (Cervus elaphus) were collected in four Croatian regions. Sera were tested by enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the presence of antibodies against bovine herpes-virus 1 (BHV-1), parainfluenza-3 virus (PI-3), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and bluetongue virus (BTV). Specific antibodies were detected for bovine herpes virus-1 (BHV-1) in 12.50% (4 positive/32 tested) roe deer and in 25.45% (14 positive/55 tested) red deer. Additionally, positive results were obtained against parainfluenza-3 virus (PI-3) in 68.75% roe deer (22 positive/32 tested) and 83.63% red deer (46 positive/55 tested). Most of the seropositive sera were recorded among red deer in the eastern part of Croatia which is known as a district with high-density populations of wildlife species. No antibodies were detected against any of the other viral agents assayed in this study. The presence of BHV-1 and PI-3 virus antibodies indicate that both deer species have been exposed and have responded serologically to viral agents which are related or identical to the domestic livestock pathogens. This study provides the first survey for the presence of antibodies to viral diseases in cervids from Croatia.
