The knowledge of pediatricians in Croatia and usage of educational materials regarding injury prevention/safety promotion for preschool children

The burden of traumatic injury is disproportionately spread among children all over the world. Injury prevention efforts are an important societal investment. The primary health care proffesionals are very important stakeholders in the prevention of injuries among children. We performed two circles of study, first one in 2007 and the second in 2013. The aim of the study was to establish the knowledge, attitudes and everyday practice regarding injury prevention/safety promotion in the representative sample of primary health care proffesionals comprised from pediatricians working in the primary health care. The anonymous questionnaire with questions about knowledge, attitudes and everyday practice regarding injury prevention/safety promotion was sent to the pediatricians. In 2007 the total number of 236 questionnaires was distributed out of which 99 were answered and submitted to the analysis (42%). In 2013 the total number of 264 questionnaires was distributed, but only 65 participants answered (24%), which can be inerpreted as a sign of saturation due to various on-going surveys and significant amount of work required to fill the questionnaires. Thanks to the project "The Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion for Preschool Children" in 2013 we recorded a significant increase in both awareness and knowledge about accidents in childhood. Despite of that, the results of this study also show that there is a need to continue the project in order to help health care proffesionals to adopt the correct attitudes and transfer them further to the parents.
