Transgenerational transmission of violence

The aim of this study was to see whether there is a transgenerational transmission of violence within the family, and to find the factors that increase the likelihood of child abuse.Data for the study were collected during February, 2013, using the "Child Abuse Questionnaire”, whose application was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Zagreb Medical Faculty. The study included a total of 118 respondents (91 mother, 27 fathers). Based on our statistical analysis, we found that subjects who were exposed to childhood psychological abuse by their parents transmitted the exact pattern to their offspring, so 21.3% of the respondents who were physically abused by their mother and 31% respondents that were abused by their father physically abuse their children. Also, 86.4% of respondents who were exposed to childhood physical abuse by the father and 88.3% of respondents who experienced physical abuse by the mother transmit the pattern of violent behavior on their children. Three independent variables that are statistically significant also contribute to the model of violent behavior, such as: age, male sex, and number of family members who live together in a household. Due to low turnout of respondents of only 26.22%, it is clear that this issue is very sensitive and that parents avoid giving their opinions about it. The research proved that personal experience of mental and physical abuse in childhood increases the risk of parents becoming abusers of their own children.
