Analysis of tram traffic vibrations in respect to tram track structure and exploitation period

Vibrations caused by tramway vehicles passing through highly populated urban areas present a great impact on the quality of life of citizens. Beside the life quality, severe vibrations can also influence structural integrity of surrounding buildings and other infrastructure. In order to provide optimal tram track structure for the extensive 148 km long tram network of Zagreb Municipal Transit System, influence of the tram track structure on the vibration propagation should be closely monitored and analysed. Standard tram structure in Zagreb is a track based on a continuous concrete slab with discrete rail supports. In 2006, a section of the track on Horvacanska Street has been reconstructed using two different track structures, a standard one described earlier, and a modified solution designed for vibration reduction. This modified structure features the rail supported on a continuous elastic bearing. Considering that both standard and reconstructed tracks are situated on the same railway line, in a distinct belt, with a 4 m axis distance, the vibration measurement point was placed between the tracks. The paper provides analysis of vibrations measured on described tracks immediately after construction and after 5 years of exploitation. Vibrations have been measured under tram traffic as well as in controlled environment using an impact hammer. Thorough analysis provided information on behaviour of different tram structures under the same traffic load and hammer impacts. Since vibrations have been measured over a period of 5 years using same principles and under same traffic load, influence of structure aging and deformations over time have also been analysed.
