Structure of microtubule network in neuronal cell after modulated RF exposure
The influence of GSM (Global System of Mobile) modulated radiofrequency (RF) radiation on microtubule network and proliferation of continuous culture of neuronal cell line SH-SY5Y was estimated. SH-SY5Y cells were exposed in triplicate to GSM modulated RF field frequency of 915 MHz inside the Gigahertz Transversal Electromagnetic Mode cell (GTEM-cell) for 1, 2, and 3 hours. The RF field was generated by the signal generator combined with power amplifier and signal modulator. The electric field strength was adjusted to 10 V/m. The average specific absorption rate (SAR) was calculated to be 0.23 W/kg. Negative- and positive cell controls were included into the experiment. The structure of microtubule proteins was determined by means of indirect immunocytochemistry methodology. Cell growth was recognised by cell counts determined for each hour of exposure during ten post-exposure days. Significant alterations of microtubule structure were observed after three hours of exposure. In comparison to the controls, a significant decrease in cell growth was found three days after three-hour of exposure to radiation. In conclusion, regarding the exposure time, 915 MHz GSM modulated RF radiation affects microtubule network and consequently growth of neuronal cell line SH-SY5Y.
