The discovery of Lower Miocene loess in Europe: a new document for the global aridity
Relatively thick units composed of fine-grained material, the lack of any type of internal structures and fossils, conchoidal fractures in quartz grains, together with a terrestrial depositional environment indicate transport and settling by wind, while the predominance of loose silt-sized particles and the brownish to yellowish color characterize them as loess. The occurrence of loess units in the succession, their thickness and the lack of pollen suggests frequent and sometimes long periods of a windy arid climate which was temporarily interrupted by more humid conditions that generated alluvial deposition. The studied loess represents the desert type probably produced by salt-weathering, and together with the penecontemporaneous salina-type lake supports the Early Miocene arid climate.
