Mulching and irrigation in green papper growing

Vransko polje in the Mediterranean part of Croatia is a typical vegetable growing area in which summer vegetable production is unfeasible without irrigation. In such conditions, a field trial was set up with the aim of determining the effect of mulching and irrigation upon the green pepper yield components. The trial involved two irrigation systems (drip irrigation and sprinklre irrigation) and three kinds of mulching (black PE, photodegradable transparent film and biodegradable cellulose film), as well as a control without mulch. The trial was set up according to the split - plot method in three replications. In mulching treatments, at a depth of 10 cm, the mean decade soil temperatures were by 3-4,5 °C higher under transparent film, by 1,5-3,5 °C higher under black film, and by l,5-2,0 °C lower than the temperatures of unmulched soil. Depending on the mulch type and irrigation method, plants were by 28-68% higher four weeks after planting and by 13-91 % higher after eight weeks than those grown without mulching under sprinkler irrigation (the usual technology). In comparsion with the usual technology, yields of market green peppers were by 13-87 % higher in other technology types. In the first three weeks of picking, a 44 % higher yield was achieved in mulching treatments with PE films than the total yield in the common green pepper production technology. Drip irrigation resulted in a 3-51 % higher yield of market green pepper while the yield in the first three weeks of picking was by 10-45 % higher, depending on the mulching method.
