Reinforced concrete, prestressed tendons and cement mortar in seismic renewal of historic structures in Dubrovnik

This paper represents an overview of two phases of seismic renewal carried out on historic structures in Old Town of Dubrovnik in Croatia. First phase, which lasted from 1979 till 1991, was characterized by use of reinforced concrete jacketing on inside surfaces of masonry walls and replacement of existing floor structures with reinforced concrete slabs. Masonry city bell towers were stabilized with vertical prestress by tendons anchored into concrete slabs cast at bottom and top of the structure. With those measures desired structural strength was achieved but the essential properties of the structure were changed and the inside historical texture of buildings was detracted. Such issues were taken into the account in the second phase of seismic renewal which started in 1999 and still lasts. On example of seismic rehabilitation of two historic palaces new approach methods are shown and they consist of injection of cement mortar into the dry unbonded infill of thick bearing masonry walls, retention of existing wooden flooring structures additionally strengthen with steel profiles and transverse prestress in floor levels with stainless steel rods.
