The Nursery Alice

This thesis sheds some light on The Nursery Alice (1890), Lewis Carroll’s own adaptation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), which has been marginalised and misunderstood by literary critics and audience ever since its publication in 1890. The introductory part of the thesis gives some background details: how the original and its adaption came about, an account of the author’s life and literary works and of his cooperation with John Tenniel, the illustrator. The main part focuses on the differences between the two works and offers possible explanations for their existence through a comparative analysis by chapters. The results of the analysis reveal differences in length, structure, mode and tone between the two versions of Alice story, and the differences of the status of the illustrations in the compared narratives, which can be ascribed to their different intended audiences. In adapting the story for the readers up to five years of age, the author used the narrator as a guide who directs the readers’ experiences of the story and leads them towards revealing the overall meaning the story hidden in the accompanying illustrations. Thus The Nursery Alice exposes itself not only as a worthy literary work for young readers, but also as a source of insights for understanding the original version, confirming the author once again as an ingenious storyteller and writer.
