Effective Pollination Period Limited Fruit Set of Sweet Cherry "Tugarka"

Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is self-incompatible. Low rates of fertilization are not always the result of poor pollen performance. On the fruit set influence flower quality, weather during flowering time, presence of pollen vectors and effective pollination period. Effective pollination period is the number of days during the pollination which is effective for fruit set and is determinate by stigma receptivity, pollen tube growth and ovule longevity. The study was conducted on sweet cherry cultivar 'Tugarka', the most common cultivar grown in the Mediterranean part of Croatia. Previously study on this cultivar indicated low rates of fertilization irrespective of pollenizers. Day before flowering, branches were emasculated and isolated. Every day, from full bloom to the end of the bloom, flowers were artificially pollinated. After pollination branches were isolated at the end of the bloom. Fruit set was recorded just before the harvest. Pistils were collected and fixed 24 h after pollination, and were observed using a fluorescent microscope. Percentage of pistils with stigma receptivity and ovule viability for every day of pollination were recorded. Effective pollination period was short, from 4 to 5 days with very low fruit set (1.9-8.5% in 2008 ; 2.9-5.7% in 2009). Ovule longevity was limiting factor for fruit set. Three day after pollination 40 to 50% ovules were degenerative.
