Joint Estimation of Equivalent Electrical Model Parameters and State-of-Charge for VRLA Batteries
Due to intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, they are often combined with energy storage devices (electrochemical batteries, fuel cells, flywheel etc.) that enable time-shift between energy production and consumption. The local integration of various energy sources (renewables and other non-conventional), storage devices and loads can in general be termed as a microgrid. In order to design a microgrid power flow optimization algorithm based on production and consumption power profile prediction, energy storage devices models must be known. In this paper we verify existing battery equivalent electrical model (first developed for Li-ion batteries) based on a performed VRLA battery stack charging and discharging test with constant current. Variations in battery storage capacity that according to Peukert's law mainly depend on discharging current is neglected, i.e., model identification is done at a single operating point. Finally, a joint Kalman filter is developed in order to estimate battery equivalent electrical model parameters and state-of-charge simultaneously.
