Evaluation of the NOVA-10 STAT/routine chemistry analyzer
The Nova 10 (NOVA Biomedical, Waltham, MA) is an electrolyte analyzer for serum, plasma, CSF and urine testing. It uses a microcomputer-based operating system to measure analytes and calculate both automated and stat-analyses.The aim was to evaluate analytical performance of the instrument according to the ECCLS guidelines (imprecision, accuracy, carry-over, linearity, and comparison studies). Sodium, potassium, chloride, total calcium (tCa) and lithium were evaluated. Control material used in the study Stat Profile Control 1-3, Precinorm U, Precipath U and Serodos. Randomly chosen patient sera were used in comparison study for Na+, K+, Cl- and tCa on the Synchron CX-3 (Beckman), and Li+ on Flame Photometer PHF-104 (Hycel, France). Intra-assay CV was <1% for Na+, K+, Cl-, tCa, and 1.08% for Li+. Inter-assay CV for Na+, K+, Cl-, tCa and Li+ ranged from 1.25%-1.68% respectively. Carry-over was negligible (K<0.01%). Linearity for all analytes was within the declared analytical range. Results of the comparison study (Passing Bablok) showed no statistically significant difference neither for Na+, K+, Cl- and tCa compared with Synchron CX3 (p>0.001), nor for Li+ compared with Flame Photometer. In conclusion, results of the evaluation suggest that NOVA 10 is a precise, accurate and reliable instrument for daily routine.
