Sažetak
This paper presents estimation of geochemical ambient or current background concentrations of selected chemical parameters in groundwater of the Samobor alluvial aquifer which is located in the western part of the Zagreb area, the Croatian capital. When defining groundwater quality it is necessary to estimate background concentrations of chemical parameters, especially those which naturally occur in groundwater. This is clearly outlined in the Groundwater directive (GWD). Background concentrations of naturally occurring contaminants have to be taken into account when determining groundwater quality standards, according to the provision of the GWD. Background concentrations should be defined as a range of values, not as fixed values (mean or median). Intensive development of industry, agriculture and the existence of numerous illegal waste deposits and leaky sewerage have impact on groundwater quality. Consequences are seen in high concentrations of pollutants like heavy metals, pesticides and nitrates. In such condition, ambient background concentrations were estimated by using model-based objective method, namely Iterative 2- technique, which includes probability graph approaches and depend on geochemical conceptual model of the site. Before calculating ambient background concentrations, a combination of exploratory data analysis tools was used to obtain an insight to data structure, anomalies and outliers.
