Sažetak
Remarkable heterogeneity of freshwaters caused by complex interactions between hydrological and abiotic factors results in high biodiversity. Phytoplankton as a photosynthetic community supports primary production and is the primary source of energy in water. In this paper the usefulness of phytoplankton observations in freshwaters was explained on three case studies. Phytoplankton was described as a useful indicator of oligotrophy and reference community in Vransko Lake (Cres). Also, the same assemblages were used to explain how theoretical phytoplankton functional classifications can be used in monitoring of undisturbed and sensitive ecosystems. Loss of phytoplankton species diversity in Vransko Lake (Biograd) in period from 2004 to 2009 serves as a predictor of critical ecosystem changes in vulnerable karstic shallow system. In spite of other environmental parameters in Lake Brljan, phytoplankton show great anthropogenic influence and, like in other two lake systems, is important descriptor of the environment ecological status
