Morphology-based functional approach vs. functional classification of the freshwater phytoplankton (Lake Vrana, Cres)
The phytoplankton assemblages were investigated in Vansko Lake, Island Cres. During 2010 samples were collected monthly from April to September at the 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 meters depth and analysed with Uthermöl method. The main goal of the paper was to describe phytoplankton assemblages in terms of taxonomical, functional and morpho-functional approach ; to determine whether or not is a morpho-functional approach as applicable as functional approach and to estimate how much of the biomass variance of the phytoplankton groups for each functional classification was explained by the monthly variation. During the period of investigation phytoplankton biomass reached a minimum value of 0.023 mg/l August (40m) and a maximum of 0.7 mg/l April (5m). Biomass maximum was concentrated in upper layers up to 30 m depth. The dominant species in Vransko Lake were Dinobryon sociale, Peridinium sp. and Cyclotella sp., dominant functional groups were A, E and Lo and morpho-functional groups II, V and VI. As a conclusion it is determined that morpho-functional groups are as applicable in describing a phytoplankton community as functional groups. The morpho-functional group advantages are less complicated research process and faster results.
