Background of extreme weight loss and weakness - right atrial myxoma
A 63-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of extreme weight loss (about 20 kg within 6 months), weakness, fatigue, and biochemical abnormalities (high erythrocyte sedimentation rate, elevated C-reactive protein value, decreased hemoglobin, deviation in protein electrophoresis). Before admission he was extensively examined due to the commonest reasons for mentioned symptoms - occult malignancy, hematological, autoimmune, and infectious diseases. Echocardiography revealed a large tumor in the right atrium. The histology of surgically removed tumor revealed a cardiac myxoma. Five months later, patient remains well, with normal echocardiographic and laboratory findings ; his body mass increased by 15 kg. In this example we want to know biochemists with a rare, treatable, heart disease, which manifests with significant deviations in routine laboratory parameters. Early recognition of this disease allows faster healing of patients, and makes unnecessary performing more expansive laboratory analysis.
