Catatonic schizophrenics according to sex
Methods: From the base population of 10569 schizophrenic patients recorded in Croatian Psychotics Case Register (CPCR). A representative sample of 402 patients (207 males and 195 females) was obtained for further field-clinical- epidemiological follow-up. These patients were followed up until 1990/91. In this sample there were 59 (14.7%) patients, who were diagnosed at least once in their life as catatonic schizophrenics (V/295.2) according to ICD classification. Among these ever catatonic patients, there were 28 males and 31 females. Various socio-demographic, clinical and hospital characteristics were analyzed according to sex. Results: In the group of ever catatonic schizophrenics, no significant difference in almost all variables among males and females were found. Differences were found only in marital status, where there were more schizophrenic women in the category 'other' (divorced or widows). It was also found that (according to the ratings obtained by trained field psychiatrist) female patients have significantly better social functioning than males. Conclusion: There is no significant difference between male and female catatonic schizophrenics in the majority of analyzed variables.
