Attachment of the zebra mussel on the artificial substrates in the reservoir Dubrava (River Drava, Croatia)
Dense populations of Dreissena polymorpha Pall. in the reservoirs of the hydro-electric power plant system in the River Drava reduce the water flow around turbine by clogging tunnel walls and grids. The aim of our study was to investigate the attachment of zebra mussels on two types of artificial substrates (concrete and metal) at 3 different depths in the reservoir Dubrava near the dam. The mussels preferred concrete substrate (up to 164, 408 individuals per m2) over metal plates. The highest density and biomass were recorded at 5 m depths. The majority of individuals were one year old, indicating high reproductive capacity.
