Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion –the Challenge of Social Pediatrics

In developed part of the world after the first year of life, during all childhood up to 18 years, the leading cause of death are injuries. In the developing part they become the first cause of death after the fifth year. The burden of injuries is important in all age groups till the end of life and after the childhood they remain the first cause of death in the middle age, too. Predictions for the future are that the proportion of injuries among the death causes will increase because of successful solving of some other public health problems but also because of higher exposure to the risk situations. The disability is also close connected with injuries. The injuries have the impact in developing of psychological disturbances as depression and PTSD, too. The social health of community is affected by frequent accidents, the demographic lost are significant. The whole society has a huge economic lost mainly in the health sector but also in other sectors. The injury prevention is one of the most important priorities in the health promotion and protection. For the children's health the importance of injuries today are the same as it was those of infectious diseases and nutritional deficiencies in the past. Most injuries can be understood and prevented and it is important to promote that attitude among public as well as among professionals. Still today the remnants of traditional fatalistic attitude towards injuries are present. Different projects take places all over the world with the aim to decrease number and consequences of injuries. Injuries are highly preventable and to decrease this type of avoidable burden for children, their families and the whole society is an important goal of social pediatrics in XXI century.
