Involvement of primary health care professionals in child injury prevention and safety promotion program

Injury is a leading cause of death for children worldwide. Solving the child injury problem means the multidisciplinary approach in which the role of primary health care professionals (PHCP) is very important. Because of their direct and often contact with children and their caregivers PHCP are ideally positioned for general prevention efforts. It is assumed that because of the huge burden for the child life and health injury prevention and safety promotion have the appropriate place in the preventative work. But it is not always the case. With competing priorities injury prevention may often be seen as being less important than other public health priorities. The responsibility for prevention is often put more with individuals, parents or other subjects than the health professionals. Regarding the knowledge study from the USA found that the percentage of correct answers about trauma epidemiology given by physicians and nurses was only about 50%, study of Croatian PHCP found about 70% correct answers of the main facts with the respond rate to the questionnaire of only 40%. Attitudes, knowledge and practice are all connected. The study from the United Kingdom found that the knowledge of baby walkers related injuries predicted whether the pediatricians gave the advice to parents or not. In Croatian survey we found that even in the case of good professional knowledge the transfer of the knowledge to the parents is not sufficient. The whole scope of barriers exists to effective practice for health professionals in childhood injury prevention.
