Impact of fluoride agents on mechanical properties of orthodontic wires
Effects of fluoride prophylactic agents on mechanical properties of regular and nitrified nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) Bioforce Sentalloy wires were investigated. Specimens (25 × 0.508 × 0.508 mm) were immersed in Elmex gelée, MI Paste Plus and dH2O (control) for 1 hour at 37°C. After immersion, the loading and unloading elas-tic modulus (E) and yield strength (YS) of ten samples from each group were measured with a 3-point bend- ing test in a thermal chamber at 37°C. ANOVA and Games-Howell post-hoc test were used in statistical anal-ysis. The unloading YS of Ni-Ti for Elmex gelée is significantly higher in respect to dH2O (p=0.007). In dH2O, Ni-Ti showed significantly lower results in unloading YS, when compared to nitrified Ni-Ti (p=0.029). Dark discolorations are visible in all tested groups. Elmex gelée affects significantly unloading mechanical properties of regular Ni-Ti wire. MI Paste Plus has no significant effect on mechanical properties of tested wires.
