Design of orthodontic mini-implants contributing to implantation torque
Aim was to determine contribution of design characteristics of orthodontic mini-implants on maximum insertion torque (MIT), vertical force at MIT and maximum vertical force during implantation, with cortical bone thickness as covariate. Ten specimens of six types of cylindrical self-drilling orthodontic mini- implants (Dual Top) with diameters from 1.4 to 2.0 mm and length of 6 and 8 mm were measured using opti-cal stereomicroscope, and then manually inserted into the swine ribs. Cortical bone thickness was measured with a digital sliding caliper. The MIT and vertical forces were recorded, and interpreted with ANOVA and F Value. Cortical bone thickness (p<0.0001), length of implant (p=0.0065) and lead angle of thread (p=0.0003) have significant influence on the MIT, R-Squared = 0.5520, F Value= 1.41. Maximum vertical force during implantation depends on length of screw (p = 0.0493), and lead angle of thread (p<0.0001), with R-Squared = 0.5962 and F Value= 1.13.
