The Portrait of Mothers and Fathers in Croatian Daily Newspapers and in a Magazine for Parents: Today and Twenty Years Ago
Results indicated more frequent mentions of both mothers and fathers in 2011 compared to 1991. In all the newspapers across time mothers are mentioned more often than fathers. Given that the analysis showed that these differences decreased, it may indicate a change in the perception of father’s role which reflects the awareness of greater paternal importance in child development. Fathers are still more often presented in a negative context. As Deven (1994, acc. Lamb, 1997) noticed, articles describing men’s failure are more common than those that examine their responsibilities and positive contributions. Number of negative presentations of fathers did not significantly decrease or increase in last twenty years. Yet, the number of negative representations of mothers increased significantly.
