Condition of huchen (Hucho hucho Linnaeus, 1758) from the Croatian-Slovenian river Kupa
The Huchen (Hucho hucho) is the top predator of salmonid waters in the Danube watershed. This species is sensitive to disturbances in its habitats such as those caused by construction of dams, regulation of river flow and water pollution. Therefore huchen status on the IUCN Red list is endangered (EN). To address these threats and present scientific data on huchen biology, the Second International Hucho Symposium was organized in Łopuszna, Poland in September 2012, 24 years after the first symposium held in Germany. The huchen inhabits rivers in north-western Croatia, which are direct or indirect tributaries of the Danube. Its Croatian IUCN status is the same as the IUCN Red list – endangered (EN). On the other hand, the river Kupa still has a vital huchen population. Regular stocking of fingerlings from the hatchery in Slovenia strengthens this population. Most of the previous papers on huchen have mainly concerned its genetics and habitat. Nevertheless, data on huchen growth and condition are limited. The objective of this paper was to study two similar relationships of top predatory fish such as the huchen ; namely CF and fish length and length-weight relationships.
