Blends of thermoplastic polyurethane and polypropylene
Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was blended with polypropylene (PP) in different weight percentages in a twin-screw extruder and characterized by dynamic mechanical (DMA) and X-ray analaysis.Mechanical properties was also measured.Viscoelastic and mechanical properties of pure TPU, PP and TPU/PP blends were studied. The viscoelastic functions storage modulus (E')loss modulus (E'') and tg delta were determined by DMA in the temperature range of -100 to 250oC.Mechanical properties, tensile strength and breac were determined on the universal taster for mechanical investigations at the room temperature.DMA investigations indicated that the PP was partially miscible with TPU.This partial miscibillity is due to the lack of interfacial interaction and adhesion between the nonpolar crystalline PP and polar TPU phase. The mechanical results showed higher tensile strength and less elongation at break with the addition of PP in TPU.
