A Relational View of Strategy, Knowledge and Teamwork: Implications for Organizational Success
Numerous interactions and organization design issues yet have not been properly addressed or empirically explained. Strategic orientation, knowledge characteristics and teamwork practices are one of those under-investigated topics. They should be comprehensively and jointly observed through the performance lenses. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to analyze the relationship among strategy, knowledge and teamwork, in order to determine their effects on organizational performance. We analyzed how strategic orientation towards either exploration or exploitation, together with employee know-how and horizontal integration, predict overall organizational performance. The empirical research was conducted through a field study of the largest Croatian organizations. Using data from 51 companies, we conducted several multiple regression analyses in order to determine the best model fit. The paper extends the previous research by making four important contributions to organization design and knowledge management literature. It clearly shows that both explorative and exploitative activities are needed for organizational success. Next, it confirms that employee know-how and horizontal integration are key determining factors of organization design which significantly influence on performance results. Finally, the results revealed that strategy, employee know-how and horizontal integration more strongly influence on non-financial than financial performance measures. The paper provides useful managerial insights about interplay among strategy, organization design, and performance. It offers a new understanding of the role and importance of knowledge and knowledge characteristics. Employee knowhow is recognized as extremely important for organizational performance. However, cross-functional teamwork efforts can additionally increase the performance margin, especially if they are aligned with other design solutions. In other words, organizations can be successful if their managers implement several corresponding design mechanisms simultaneously.
