Influence of electro slag remelting on the mechanical properties of 51CrV4 spring steel
Electro slag remelting (ESR) is an attractive process because it is a consumable-electrode remelting technique in which liquid metal droplets are refined during contact with a molten slag, thereby providing a cleaner, more uniform, alloy with the minimum of segregation, which has a positive influence on the properties of the steel. The durability of springs is limited by their plastic deformation, fatigue and fracturing. From this point of view, the use of spring steel with the following properties is recommended: high ductility and toughness at the operating temperature (from -40°C to + 50°C), and good hardenability, which provides the required mechanical properties, even at maximum dimensions. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the influence of ESR on the fracture and impact toughness, together with the tensile strength, the yield strength, the elongation and the necking of 51CrV4 leaf-spring steel.
