Revolution and Melancholia: A Freudian Critique of Derrida's Marx
In my lecture I propose that Derrida's assemblage of mourning and political economy, in Specters of Marx, corresponds to Freud's position on economy and mourning, especially in „Trauer und Melancholie.“ Freud's take on mourning however depends on the contact it organizes with melancholia, with melancholia calling into question what psychoanalysis wants to define as economy. Given the fact that melancholia is conspicuously absent from Derrida's otherwise Freudian configuration of the work of mourning in his book on Marx, I analyze Freud's approach to work in „Trauer und Melancholie“ in order to show that work in Marx should be canvassed not against mourning but against Freudian as well as pre-Freudian configurations of melancholia.
