System Overcoming Risk Factors in Process of Socialization Children With Special Needs

This presentationis related to the implementation of the psychosocial support program for the children with special needs who had to be placed in a rehab institution due to the nature of their disability neuromotoric, visual and/or hearing problems). They live with additional difficulties since they do not grow within their family. Program is developed with the hypothesis that for successful socialization there is a need for continuing, structured collaboration with all participants of the socialization process: parents, teachers, care takers, other rehab professionals, peers. In particular so, when children start to display signs of innapropriate and/or undesirable behavior. Main form through which program was implemented is peer group, which meets once a week throught the school year. By implementing specially developed activities and structure group develops its support system, group identity, sense of belonging and security, what results in the development of positive capacity within each and every child. It also results in the prevention of psychosocial deviations. Group leaders operate in pairs. Their role is similar to the one of an informal leader, who is rather close with each and every child, yet at the sametime keeps distance typical for apositive authority. positive authority uses his/her skills to leadgropu in the desired directtion, creating favorable ebvironment for growth and development. Presentation covers reflection on the implemantation of the program during the years 1998 and 1999, in three different institutions in Zagreb: Special Hospital for the Treatment of Children with Neuromotor Problems Goljak, Center fo rRehabilitaion of Children and Youth Spoljarov Prilaz and Center for Education and Rehabilitation Vinko Bek.
