Characterization of ladle furnace slag from the carbon steel production
In order to make a complete characterization of ladle furnace slag (LF slag, LFS), as nonhazardous industrial waste, and to solve its permanent disposal and/or recovery, bearing in mind both the volumes formed in the Croatian steel industry and experiences of developed industrial countries, a study of its properties was undertaken. For this purpose, samples of ladle furnace slag, taken from the regular production process in the CMC Sisakd.o.o. between October 2010 and October 2011, were subjected to a series of tests. The chemical composition of ladle furnace slag samples was investigated by means of a several different analytical methods. The results from the chemical analysis show that the approximate order of abundance of major components in ladle furnace slag is as follows: CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, FeO, MnO, Cr2O3, P2O5, TiO2, K2O and Na2O. The investigation of the mineralogical and micro structural composition of LF slags was taken by combination of X-Ray Diffraction Analysis (X- RDA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS).The results of the X-ray diffraction phase analysis show that the basis of the examined ladle furnace slag samples is made of a mixture of metal oxides, silicates and aluminates. The metal concentration, anions, pH value and conductivity in water eluates was determined in order to define the influence of ladle furnace slag on the environment. The final results showed that the ladle furnace slag does not contain constituent which might in any way affect the environment harmfully. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in ladle furnace slag were measured by spectrometric method using gamma-ray spectrometer with HPGe detector. The presence of radio nuclides and their activity showed that the analyzed slag can be used as supplement in the production of construction materials or as aggregate in road construction.
