Čto v horvotskoj leksikografii javljaetsja zaglavnym slovom
While determining the composition of the left side of the dictionary, i.e. the list of headwords, the lexicographer faces the following questions: 1. the choice of lexis to be included in the dictionary, 2. which lexical units may assume headword status, and 3. which form the headword should take. This paper discusses the second and third question, namely which semantic and grammatical requirements a lexical unit must meet in order to appear as a headword as well as how these requirements are met in Croatian dictionaries. Prior to the analysis, the author provides the theoretical framework (lexicographic terminology, the principles of listing headwords, the form and structure of headwords), then goes on to examine dilemmas in deciding on headwords, citing dictionary examples. The final conclusion is that any unsuccessful attempt at dictionary-making is primarily caused by the problem of determining the identity of the lexical unit which is being considered as the headword, as well as determining its form. It is only after the lexicographer has addressed this problem that they may face the challenges of the right side of the dictionary.
