Wie spricht man von Leid und Hoffnung im Religionsunterricht? Analyse des Diskurses und der geschlechtsspezifischen Implikationen in den Schulbüchern für den katholischen Religionsunterricht in Kroatien
The starting point of the author's work is to consider suffering from the standpoint of its educational and theological problematics. In the first part of the article the importance of religious education in schools for pointing out this to students is shown, while the second part of the article presents results from an analysis of currently used religious education textbooks for primary and secondary schools in Croatia. In particular, the contents and features of discourses on suffering and hope are examined in view of their gender implications. The author shows how the theological and pedagogical discourse on suffering and hope in religious education textbooks follows developmental possibilities, issues and needs of students and how these connect with issues of the contemporary world. Textbooks help students cope with suffering and reveal the motives of hope. Suffering is shown in the light of God's plan of salvation and Christ's paschal mystery. Christian hope is based on the experience of God's love ; it helps to see the ultimate goal and has an impact in this direction. Textbook texts according to the author's observations are mostly gender neutral. Prayer texts are usually formulated in the masculine gender. Authors of texts in the accompanying contributions are mostly men, which corresponds to the historical perception of men as the main bearers of science and the arts. Gender implications are especially present in the illustrations, with an obvious commitment to gender equality. This is reflected primarily in the selection of photographs from life where little boys and girls as well as older girls and boys are shown. Although some situations of empathic social behaviour remains predominantly associated with women, textbooks show some shifts from stereotypical representations. Documentary photographs of church life often reflect the present dominance of men in the liturgy and preaching. Artistic paintings and sculptures, especially those inspired by biblical texts also maintain the historically perceived dominance of men in the Bible.
