Science and Art

This year we are organizing a second International interdisciplinary scientific symposium: CroArt- Scia2013 – Asymmetry: Art & Science & Education, which will take place from the 8th to the 11th of May in Zagreb, Croatia, under the auspices of the Department of Mathematical, Physical and Chemical Sciences, Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Zagreb, Croatia. The symposium is jointly organized by The Matrix Croatica, Museum of Contemporary Art - Vjenceslav Richter and Nada Kareš Richter Collection, The Society of Culture and Art Ivan Filipović, The Ruđer Bošković Institute, Technical Museum Zagreb, Museums of Hrvatsko Zagorje – Veliki Tabor Castle and Croatian Chemical Society. CroArtScia2013 is intended for those working the arts and sciences, who recognize the need for interaction and collaboration. One of the themes is captured in the equation Culture = Science + Art and the need to strive to realise this in practice. Therefore, this year we have extended the program to educational aspects, in order to encourage the participation of educators from various fields and at all levels of the educational process. CroArtScia2013 - Asymmetry: Art & Science & Education is an international interdisciplinary conference. The interdisciplinarity of the symposium is intended to produce real collaboration between scientists and artists in an effort to sensitize the wider public to the interactions of natural sciences, humanities and arts. The organizers intend to encourage artists to join in research projects, which will be presented to the public and at later CroArtScia conferences. The specific purpose of this second CroArtScia meeting is to present and discuss various approaches to the topic of asymmetry and asymmetries. Asymmetry will be explored in lectures, discussions, performances, exhibitions, and concerts, giving opportunities to see science though the language of the arts and vice versa. Other themes that science and art have in common will also be discussed, with the aim of comparing different ways of posing and attacking problems, rather than concentrating on the specifics of individual cases. The first meeting in the series, CroArtScia2011 - Symmetry: Art and Science, (4-7 May 2011, Zagreb) attracted wide interest, with participants from Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Italy, UK, Ukraine, and 34 presentations on the topic of symmetry across different artistic and scientific fields. The Proceedings of the first Symposium is in the final stages of preparation and will be distributed to authors who were participants at CroArtScia2011. The official language of the Symposium is English. The concept of the series of symposia is to connect scientific and artistic areas, which includes the promotion and highlighting of the breadth of Croatia’s valuable cultural heritage. For this reason part of the meeting will be held outside Zagreb, at a site of exceptional historical and cultural value, Veliki Tabor Castle.
